History of Vienna in a nutshell

The history of Vienna goes as far back as the Neolithic times, at least according to archaeological findings.  Later, during the Celtic and Roman times around 500 BC, a fortified Celtic settlement was built on the site that is now the present-day Vienna that can be seen on cam online. During the Middle Age, Vienna was under Roman, Barbarian, Maguar and Bohemian rule. The Habsburg Dynasty was founded after a great battle in 1278 which lasted for several hundred years. In this time, the Vienna University was founded in 1365, making it one of the oldest universities in Europe. In 1556, Vienna became the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This empire dissolved after WWI and the Republic of Austria was formed. Nazi Germany invaded Austria during WWII, and Vienna suffered greatly during bombings by the Allied forces. During the occupation by the Allied forces, Vienna saw its first free elections and major reconstruction of the city. The economy improved and in 1955, Austria received full sovereignty. From there on, Vienna was blessed with prosperity.
