Webcam is installed in a way to show in live broadcast the most important attraction of Rio de Janeiro, the world-famous statue of Christ the Redeemer. The height of the monument together with the pedestal is 38 m, without it – 30 m. The arm span of Christ is 28 m.

Every year about 2 million tourists from all over the world climb to the foot of the statue of Christ the Redeemer in online camera. It is located at the very top of Corcovado Mountain (at an altitude of more than 700 meters) with a picturesque panorama of the city, the bay, views of the beaches and the Maracana Stadium.

The idea of erecting the Christ the Redeemer monument, which is perfectly visible in a live camera, appeared in 1921 on the occasion with the 1000th anniversary of the independence of Brazil.

To portray Christ with outstretched arms in the form of a cross, as you see in webcam, decided the artist Carlos Osvaldo. The final draft of the monument was created by Heitor da Silva Costa. It took about 9 years to build the statue.

All the components of the Christ monument in the webcam, including its carcass, were made in France. Each of them was delivered to Brazil by railway. Starting from the end of the railway till the monument in the online camera there was built a track of 220 steps – “Caracol”. There is a chapel inside the basement of the statue of Christ the Redeemer in webcam.

The grand opening and consecration of the giant monument took place in October 1931. The statue was later consecrated again by Pope Paul VI in 1965.

In 2007, the Christ the Redeemer Monument online was named one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.
