Old fortress of Corfu
The webcam on the island of Corfu in the city of Kerkyra shows a striking landmark – the old fortress of Corfu or Paleo Frurio. On the left in the live broadcast you can see Spianada Square, where there is a monument to Ioannis Kapodistrias – the first president of Greece (1827).
The fortress of Corfu, shown in the online camera, is located in the eastern part of the island and is one of the oldest attractions in Kerkyra, an important historical and architectural monument of the Byzantine Empire. The citadel in the webcam is located on an artificially created island, separated from the city by the Contra Fossa canal.
The ancient fortress in Kerkyra, shown in the web camera, was founded around 7-8 centuries AD on a cape protruding deep into the sea. The initial structures, according to archaeologists, were erected by the Byzantines, and later the construction was continued by the British and Venetians, who brought their traditional coats of arms – winged lions to many parts of the fortress.
Around the middle of the 16th century, the walls of the citadel, which you see in the online live camera, were fortified and a deep ditch was dug, which later became the Contra Fossa channel in this live cam. As a result, the island cape itself turned into an artificial island.
Simultaneously with the events described above, pirates and the Ottoman Empire attacked Kerkyra, where the live broadcast is coming from. In the fortress of Corfu, clearly visible in the online camera, several more bastions were erected, a gate appeared in the western part, and the moat was also widened. In addition, a second ditch was dug, along which walls and high rocks were built for defense. All this happened from 1546 to 1588.
Later, to the old Paleo Frurio in the web camera, two more bastions were added. On its walls you can still read the names of their engineers – Martinengo and Savorgnan from Italy.
In the middle of the 19th century, the Church of St. George, the patron saint of warriors, arose near the citadel of Kerkyra in the online camera.
The last buildings on the territory of the Corfu Fortress in this live stream originated in the 19th century: they are mainly fortified old buildings and administrative premises.
During the Second World War, most of the structures of Fort Paleo Frurio online were destroyed, but by 1956 they were completely restored.
