The Old Town was the starting point of the settlement on Rovinj. The city used to have seven gates of which only three are still intact: the Gate of St. Benedict, The Portica and The Gate of the Holy Cross. The development of the Old Town dates back to as far back as the 3rd century. Since the city was walled, there was limited space to expand, resulting in narrow houses and narrow streets of which you get a glimpse on the live webcam online.
The Church of St Euphemia
The Church of St Euphemia, which we can see on the top of the hill on this live camera, is the largest monument in the city. This Venetian Baroque building shown online was restored between 1725 and 1736. The bell tower standing tall in the scenic footage of this webcam was designed by Alessandro Monopoli, a Milanese architect. It was aimed to be a replica of the Church of St. Mark in Venice. It took 26 years to construct the tower. There’s a large copper statue of St. Euphemia on top of the tower.
There are many treasures in the Rovinj Old Town which we don’t see on camera online. In the Old Town, one can also find the town clock and a small fountain at the main town square. There used to be a tower on the south corner of the former town walls, and the town clock represents this tower. The tower was built in the 12th century originally but has been extended several times. The clock sports a lovely symbol of a Venetian lion dating back to the mid-19th century.
