Fagradalsfjall volcano

The live stream shows one of Icelandic volcanoes – Fagradalsfjall. The last volcanic eruption occurred on March 19, 2021. The volcano in the online camera is a volcanic mountain in the southwest of Iceland in the center of the Reykjanes Peninsula, 30 km southwest of Reykjavik.

Fagradalsfjall in the webcam belongs to the Reykjanes volcanic belt. It is a dormant Tuyu volcano that formed about 100,000 years ago during the last ice age, when it erupted under the glacier. At the peak of the mountain real time, there are remnants of lava – proof that the eruption has gone slightly beyond the glacier.

Fagradalsfjall, which you see live, is located northwest of the Krýsuvík volcanic system in the northeastern part of the Grindavik municipality of the Suðurnes region. To the east of Fagradalsfjall is the solitary Keilir crater. The mountain in the online camera has an oblong shape, 7.7 km wide at the base, and about 15 km long. The volcano in the webcam is a small plateau with several peaks, hills and tuff rocks. The height of the top of the mountain, shown in the webcam, is 385 meters above sea level, this is the highest point on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

The area surrounding Fagradalsfjall, where the online broadcast is coming from, is quite sparsely populated. The nearest settlement is Njarðvík, 14.7 km northwest. The territory around Fagradalsfjall is volcanic wastelands and mountain meadows.

The last eruption of the Fagradalsfjall volcano, which you see in the webcam, began on the evening of March 19, 2021. Before the start of the eruption, more than 50 thousand small earthquakes were recorded in recent months. Before that, the volcano woke up about 800 years ago.

Iceland, where the live stream is conducted from, is located at the junction of two lithospheric plates: the Eurasian and North American plates, which makes the country one of the most seismically active in the world. On the territory of Icreland there are more than a hundred volcanoes, 25 of which have been active over the past thousand years.

The main part of Iceland, where the live broadcast comes from, is a volcanic plateau that rises no higher than 2000 meters above sea level. For this reason, the entire island is covered with active volcanoes, geothermal springs and lava fields.

The center of the island in the webcam, is occupied by volcanoes and lava fields, it is impossible to live on this territory. People live in 1⁄4 of the country, occupying mainly coastal areas and valleys.
