Portixol on our webcam online – is the former fishing village, which extends along the Playa de Palma. For many years, a lot of investments were made here, which made Portixol one of the most popular places in comparison with other suburbs. Currently, this charming little village is a modern place with beautiful houses by the sea (best-selling former fishing huts).
Promenade, which you can see on this live cam, is the heart of the town. It stretches for 26 km from Portixol and Molinara to Palma from one side, and to El-Arenala from another. Automobilists “fight” for parking. It is a great luck to find a place and put your car. Here, almost everyone prefers to ride on a bicycle, skateboard, rollers or run on a specially adapted place on promenade. A lot of people prefer to walk with their dogs. There is a small beach on a bay, it is calm, especially comparing with the huge neighboring beach in the capital itself. The best time to visit beach is on June 23, because it is a holiday “Nit de Foc”. At that day, here held the biggest party in the whole Palma. It is celebrated on the eve of Saint Joan fiesta. Street parties, bonfires, fireworks, pop concerts, mummers in the guise of devils and demons.
The proximity of Portixol to the city center of Palma (can be reached even by foot) and to the airport, has made it a first-class residential area. In that are located exquisite restaurants and bars, which attract guests and locals.
The architecture in Portixol is a successful combination of “old and new”. The ancient houses were significantly improved and conveniently located between the chic new hotels and fit into the modern style of the city. Nightlife in Portixol is quite lively, especially during the peak season (summer). There is a wide selection of different bars, restaurants and clubs.
Palma de Mallorca
Those who are tired by the unhurried rhythm of the provincial Portixol, need to overcome only 2 km in order to get to the capital of the Balearic Islands archipelago – Palma de Mallorca. It is one of the oldest and largest ports of the Mediterranean. Palma is also one of the most fashionable cities in the region. The whole center is an ensemble of luxury residential areas, shopping streets, intricate alleys and restored buildings. Fragments of medieval walls are clearly visible only from the harbor.
The main attraction of the city is the Cathedral (XIV-XIX centuries), which crowns the oldest part of the city. The nave of cathedral with a height of 44 meters and a length of 121 meters makes the cathedral one of the highest Gothic structures in Europe, and its fantastic lighting system is designed by Gaudi himself. The complex also houses the Museum of the Cathedral, the Art Museum and the Palace of the Moorish rulers of the island – Palau de L’Almudain (X-XII centuries).
The most attractive part of the city is located behind the cathedral. This is very similar to a typical Arab “Medina” old quarter: the labyrinth of streets and alleys comfortably lined with fine Arab baths and the Museum of Mallorca, with the Basilica of St. Frasiska and the statue of Junípero Serra, the first Christian Church on the island- Santa Eulalia (XII-XIV centuries) and the old town hall in late-Renaissance style. Outside the quarter is settled the Castle Bellver forest (XIV., the rare for Europe sample of round fortress, here arranged Castle Museum), the old trade exchange and the Archbishop’s Palace, and also the Museum of Joan Miro (the famous Catalan surrealist painter). Also, another worth a visit place is the museum district “The Spanish Village” ( Pueblo Español).
All year round in Palma de Mallorca is preserved optimal temperature. The island of Mallorca is situated in the zone of dominance of the Mediterranean, forming a warm winter and hot summer. In the height of summer season there remain high temperature, but the heat is not exhausting due to the rather mild climate. Winter is moderately wet and quite warm. The unique climate of Mallorca allows you to perfectly relax on the island during the year. However, the main tourist season falls between April and October. At this time the beach vacation is at the highest level. The number of sunny hours a day is pretty high and the water temperature rises to 24-25 C, so it is not surprising that Mallorca is an ideal choice for a summer holiday. The winds on the island are blowing mainly in the winter and spring periods.
