Al Abbas Mosque
The live stream camera clearly shows one of the largest and oldest mosques in the world, the main shrine of Shiite Muslims – the Al Abbas mosque. The mausoleum that you see online is located in Iraq city of Karbala, the most revered city of Shiites. Karbala is compared to Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem and Mashhad.
The Al Abbas mosque, perfectly demonstrated in webcam, is located opposite the Imam Hussein mausoleum. It is one of the most visited mosques in the world.
As is well seen in online camera, Al Abbas is a giant complex, in the center of which is the mosque itself – the burial place of Abbas ibn Ali. It is clearly seen in the online camera that the roof of the Al Abbas mosque is decorated with a huge gilded dome and 2 minarets. Besides, there are 16 small domes. In the live cam there are also the gilded tomb of Abbas ibn Ali.
The mausoleum in the live camera, is located in the center of a large courtyard with buildings that are also part of the Al Abbas mosque complex. In these buildings there are halls for prayers, museums, and places for pilgrims.
The Al Abbas mosque in the online footage, was rebuilt and supplemented many times. For example, in 2012 there was a large reconstruction. In addition to the roof and other structures of the mosque in live webcam, there was created ground and underground parking, which can accommodate more than 1,000 cars. The gilded dome and minarets of the mosque were renewed.
Later, in 2014, work was done to increase the territory: additional halls for pilgrims appeared too.
As a result, the entire complex of the Al Abbas mosque you see in live stream, became larger, more convenient and safer, thanks to the strengthening of the buildings’ foundations. Especially the mosque suffered from the waters of the Euphrates River. After reconstruction, this problem disappeared.
Besides the natural phenomena that destroy the Al Abbas mosque, which you see in the webcam online broadcast, this shrine was attacked. For example, in March 1991, Shiites attacked a mosque after defeating Iraq in the war in the Persian Gulf. The mausoleum was damaged. After this event, the Al Abbas mosque, which is well visible in live camera, was restored.
Further, in the period from 2003 to 2011, there were the war actions in Iraq, which grew into a civil war, carrying echoes even today.
Another historic event that touched the Al Abbas mosque in online webcam is a series of explosions by al-Qaeda on March 2, 2004 during the Ashura (day of mourning). The terrorist act took the lives of 85 to 178 people. The number of victims ranges from 100 to 500 people.
January 5, 2006 is another tragic date in the history of the Al Abbas mosque, which you can see well online. The attack was carried out with numerous explosions by the suicide bombers in the crowd near the shrines of Karbala. After the incident, 60 people were killed, more than 100 people were injured.
On April 28, 2007, another terrorist attack occurred near the Al Abbas mosque in online webcam. The explosion killed 68 people, 160 people were injured.
The last terrorist attack to the present time was occurred on September 11, 2008. The power of the explosion was not so strong, so one person died, and several people were injured.
