La Rochelle

 

The port city La Rochelle is on our live stream web camera, located near the Bay of Biscay. The city is rich in its history. In the past here hosted the Templars, who built a large port in La Rochelle, which is clearly visible on our online webcam. In the old days, La Rochelle was mainly a trading city, and close to the 20th century acquired the title of a resort.

There are two fortresses at the entrance to the harbor of the old port of La Rochelle - La Chaîne  and Saint Nicolas, built in the 14th century, they are clearly visible on our stream. Near the fortress of La Chaîne  stands another - La Lanterne, in the 17th century was a prison for English pirates. The Tower of La Lanterne was also used as a lighthouse. The old port on our web camera is the highlight of the city. It is full of traditional restaurants. From the port it is easy to go to the famous Fort Boyard.

The main shopping street of the city is Palais. Next to it are buildings with samples of medieval architecture.

The most popular place in La Rochelle is the square in front of the Big Clock - Grosse Horloge. Tourists like to inspect the city hall in a castle of the 15th century, the Church of St. Sauveur, the palace of Henry IV. Families with children will be interested to visit the largest aquarium in Europe - it is also located in La Rochelle.

Conveniently straight from La Rochelle sail to the island of Re, with beautiful vineyards and oyster farms. Also here are unusually beautiful beaches. Re is very cozy. It is not allowed to build houses above two floors here. The color of the houses must be white with green shutters and orange tiles of a strictly defined shape.

If you want to relax on the beach, then 3 km from La Rochelle there is Les Minimes beach. Tourists like the sea trip on a yacht along the entire coast, during which they can plunge into the water of the Bay of Biscay.

Gastronomic gourmets will be interested in local cheese " Chabichou du Poitou". This is the oldest French cheese, from goat's milk. It is covered with white mold and has a strong smell.

The climate in La Rochelle is quite mild and marine. From June to September - the warmest time. The average air temperature is about +25 degrees. The swimming season begins at the end of June. Winters are rainy, and snow falls rarely and quickly melts.
