Heimaey Island, where the online broadcast is conducted from, is the largest island in the Icelandic Vestmannaeyjar archipelago and the only one where people live. It is located south of Iceland in the Atlantic Ocean.

Vestmannaeyjar archipelago consists of one large island – Heimaey in the webcam and 13 small islands, as well as rocks and cliffs. People live only on one of them – Heimaeye, the harbor of which is shown by an online camera.

Heimaey, shown live, is considered the most beautiful island in Iceland. Here you will find mirror images of rocks in the water surface, frozen lava after the volcanic eruption that occurred on the island in 1973, panoramic platforms, numerous bird colonies, the famous puffin puffins in the south-west of the island, and well-groomed houses of local residents. Killer whales can be spotted live in the surrounding waters around the island.

If to translate the name Vestmannaeyjar from Icelandic, it will mean: “the islands of the Western people.” The first settlers of the archipelago, where the webcam is located, were the Irish. In 1627, the islands were captured by the Turkish fleet, and the Barbary pirates took people into slavery.

Vestmannaeyjar in online camera, gained fame in the 1964s during a volcanic eruption at the bottom of the ocean, which was the beginning of the formation of the new island of Surtsey.

What to see in Iceland?

The most important sights of Iceland, on the territory of which the live webcam is located, is its amazing nature, for example, volcanoes (Hekla, Katla, Eyjafjallajökull), geysers and glaciers (Jökulsarlon), the Landmannalaugar valley, the Torsmerk valley, the Westman Islands and other beautiful places.
