Brighton City View
This web camera in Brighton, a neighborhood of Brooklyn. New York online shows the other side of an area which is known for its beach scenes. On the right side, the cam online shows the Abraham Lincoln High School, an imposing two-winged, sand colored building. Just in front of it is a medical complex with several medical practices including an Eye Institute. As the webcam swivels to the left, you’ll see a tall red brick building which houses a radiology center. The live camera swivels further to the left to reveal a modern, black and white tiered building with a rooftop atrium. Next to this building runs a large street. If you allow your eyes to follow the street on the live camera, you’ll see the ocean in the background.
Brighton Beach you see in live camera, is located in the southernmost part of Brooklyn, New York. This micro neighborhood captured here on camera online lies between Coney Island and Manhattan Beach. Brighton was named after the famous UK beach town by the same name. In its hey-day in the 19th century, it was known for performances by famous artists at the concert hall, healthy bouts of horse racing. At the turn of the 20th century, the Brighton Beach boardwalk and baths were constructed.
Little Odessa
The inhabitants are mostly of Ukrainian descent and have been named Little Odessa in honor of the hometown of the majority of the Brighton Beach locals. During World War II, a wave of Ukrainian Jews immigrated to the US to avoid fascism and Nazism prevalent in Europe at the time. Russian is widely spoken in this area, and some signage is even is Cyrillic. In fact, Brighton Beach is home to the largest population of Russian immigrants in the Western Hemisphere.
Abraham Lincoln High School
The high school that can be seen on the right on this online web camera had graduated three Nobel Prize laureates namely Arthur Kornberg, Paul Berg, and Jerome Karle. The first received this illustrious award for medicine, while the latter two received the award for chemistry. Other notable alumni include singer Neil Diamond and professional NBA basketball player, Stephon Marbury. The school was built in 1929 during the Great Depression. The current student body comprises a mix of ethnic groups – African American, Hispanic, white and other racial groups.
Hurrican Sandy
Brighton Beach in the webcam, was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. This storm was the deadliest storm of the 2012 hurricane season and devastated much of the US Atlantic coastline. During the preparation for Hurrican Sandy, several bridges were shut for traffic including the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge which can be seen from this part of Brooklyn.
