This webcam is aimed at one of the most interesting and important sights of Croatia – the medieval fortress of Klis. As the online broadcast shows well, the citadel nestled on a rock, towering above the small village of Klis. The fortress in live camera is conveniently located near the popular tourist city of Split, therefore it is often included in the excursion program.

For the first time, Klis fortress, which is demonstrated by this webcam, played the role of a small Illyrian fortification, but later served as the residence of many kings of Croatia and a massive military fortification during the Ottoman wars.

The history of the Klis fortress, where the live stream comes from, dates back more than 2000 years. During this time, the defender of the border was conquered and reconstructed many times. Klis online, served as the main defensive point of Dalmatia. The height of the walls of the citadel is 140 meters.

Klis fortress, which you see in the online live camera has two parts: the lower and upper parts. The first is located on the west side, and it’s bounded on the north by Greben Mountain. The second part is high, it is an Oprah tower. In the past, it was possible to get to Klis only bypassing some gates, which are located in the western part.

Klis citadel in this webcam has been rebuilt many times. A significant part of the stone structures that can be seen here today dates back to the 17th century and the period of Venetian domination.

The main entrance of the first line of the Klis walls you see in live stream, was made by the Austrians at the beginning of the 19th century where there were previously ancient Venetian gates. A little to the left there is preserved Venetian fortification, next to it there is the “Position Avanzato” and below, underground, there is the narrow “Casemate” vaulted gallery.

The entrance to the second line of the Klis walls in the online footage, which was significantly damaged during the siege of 1648, is guarded by the Oprah tower – the most important fortification of the western part of the entire fortress, the first mention of which dates back to 1355. This entrance leads to the old medieval part, which was possessed by the Croatian nobility. The modern look of this gate also dates from the first half of the 19th century.

Bypassing the third gate, you will find the part built in the early Middle Ages. The last time it was rebuilt in 1763.

The oldest building in the territory of Klis Fortress, shown online, is the former Turkish square mosque with a dome and minaret, appeared due to the Kils capture by the Ottoman Empire in 1537.

After the occupation in 1648, the Venetians converted the mosque into the Roman Catholic Church of St. Vitus with the 17th century stone baptismal font in the Baroque style.

To the west of the temple in the live camera, stands the Bembo Bastion – the largest artillery position in the third line of fortifications and the fortress as a whole, built in the middle of the 17th century. Now there are still ancient cannons located here.

The Klis fortress, which this webcam is aimed at, was filmed in the famous series “Game of Thrones”.
