The central square of Madrid is the Plaza Mayor, surrounded by colonnades. During the Middle Ages, it served as a market square. There are notable buildings on it – the Baker’s House, decorated with frescoes, and the Butcher’s House, where municipal services are located. The center of the square is headed by the monument to Philip III on horseback. To the east of the Plaza Mayor there is the Plaza de la Provincia with the Palace of Santa Cruz, where the Spanish Foreign Ministry currently operates. Nearby there is the picturesque Villa Piazza with the beautiful city hall, where the Consistory held its meetings and was the prison of La Villa.
The most important palace in Madrid, which roadway is visible in the live webcam, is the Royal Palace in the classical Baroque style, somewhat similar to Versailles.
Madrid has many excellent museums and galleries. Prado National Museum, Queen Sofia National Museum Art Centre, Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, Aeronautics Museum, Fire Museum, Railway Museum.
