Nieuwestad District

The webcam is aimed at one of the most popular areas of the city of Leeuwarden – Nieuwestad that means New Town. As can be clearly seen in the online broadcast, this is a square and also a market street. The “New Town” shown in the webcam is located next to the canal in the very center of Leeuwarden.

The name of the Nieuwestad quarter, where the live stream comes from, was first mentioned in 1456 as an additional district or channel. There are several bridges between the two sides of Nieuwestad: Duca Martenapijp, the footbridge of Herenwaltje, Langepijp, Vischmarktpijp and Westerpijp.

The Dutch city of Leeuwarden, one of which districts is being broadcasting online on the Baltic Live Cam website, is located 150 km from the capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam.

Leeuwarden with a market street in this webcam for many centuries has been the center and capital of the amazing region of Friesland. In 2018, this city, located in the north of the Netherlands, was awarded the title of the cultural capital of Europe.

In Leeuwarden, shown online, there are many historical sights and ancient monuments (more than 600).

The Fries Museum with the main wealth of the region has a great popularity among tourists. On the ground floor of the museum you can get acquainted with the history about the north of Netherlands, learn about the Friezes, their character and language. Other halls do not have a permanent exhibition.

It is interesting to look into the Princessehof National Museum of Ceramics, located in the beautiful royal palace of the 17th century. Not far from this museum there is the symbol of the city of Leeuwarden in web camera – the unfinished “falling” Oldehove Leaning Bell Tower, whose inclination angle is more than the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. The construction of the bell tower began in 1529, when the inhabitants of the city decided to make their St. Vitus tower higher than the bell tower of St. Martin from neighboring Groningen. During the erection, there was a tilt that leaned over the construction. So, in 1532, the construction of a 40-meter tower stopped. Nowadays, this is a brick giant towers above the historic center of Leeuwarden in the online camera. On the ground floor of the bell tower there is a small exposition dedicated to the history of Oldehove, and an observation deck is open on the top of the tower.

The most popular attraction of Leeuwarden, the center of which falls into the lens of an online live camera, is the amazing architectural building of the Central Pharmacy in 1904. An important religious attraction is the neo-Gothic Church Saint Boniface (Bonifatiusplein).

Interesting fact: a spy Mata Hari was born in Leeuwarden you see online. There is a monument at one of the town canals.
