Port of Mahon, which you see in the online webcam, is a natural bay with a pier for ships, occupying 6 km. Three cruise ships can moor here at once. Mahon harbour in our live cam, is actually quite unique. It is located in a rather unusual place: in the very center of the city of Mahon. Therefore, the beautiful sights of Mahon can be reached in just a hundred steps. Mahon Harbour, viewed excellent in online camera, ranks among the finest natural bays in the Mediterranean.
The small town of Mahon (Mao), where our live streaming is from, is the capital of the island of Menorca. Interestingly, another city – Ciudadela, is considered the historical capital of Menorca, and Mahon is the official capital.
Despite the great historical experience, Mahon, whose port you are seeing online, has kept just a few historical monuments. One of the most famous landmarks of Mahon is Santa Maria church (Iglesia de Santa Maria), built at the end of the 13th century. Later, in the 18th century, the temple was restored and slightly rebuilt. This religious building became famous thanks to a large organ decorated with figures of angels.
In the 16th and 18th centuries, the Church of Santa Carmen (Inglesia Del Carmen) and the Church of Sant Francesc (Iglesia de Francisco) as also the Town Hall and the facade adorning a large clock were erected in Mahon.
The main cultural event in Mahon is the international opera week.
The island of Menorca, where is located the city of Mahon with our webcam, is the second largest island among all Balearic Islands. Despite the lack of expensive hotel complexes, Menorca is the Spanish fashionable resort. The reason is – the special status of the island as a biosphere resource dictated by UNESCO: it is forbidden to build tall buildings here.
The north of the Menorca Island is cut by bays, one of which – the bay of Mahon is visible in the online stream camera. The south is dominated by ravines. The center of Menorca is filled with flowering meadows.
There are approximately 120 beach areas in the island of Menorca, i.e. much more than in in Mallorca and Ibiza together. The most popular beaches are Cala Ana and Cala Galdana. On the southern side of the island, in Son Bou, there are 3-kilometer dunes.
The most expensive resort of Menorca is located 10 km north of Es Mercadal, near the Fornells fishing village.
If you are looking for a quiet and relaxing holiday on the beach, you will enjoy Santa Galdana Bay, located near the Ferreries village.
To the west of the Cap de Cavalleria, there are the ruins of the Phoenician village with a lighthouse. Along the coast there are beaches: Cala Pregonda, Cala del Pilar, Cala d’Algairens.
Nor far from the resort center of Cala En Porter there is a complex of amazing caves created by nature.
Visit the above-mentioned historical capital of Menorca – the city of Ciudadela, where the church of Catedral de Menorca has been preserved since the invasion of the Turks. Walk down the Plaza des Born in the historic center of the city.
Interestingly, the buildings of megalithic era epochs – the Bronze Age talayot culture: stone buildings in the inverted boats shape, have been preserved in Minorca. The largest discovery of such megaliths is Torre d’en Galmés .
On the Santa Agueda plateau there is the castle of Santa Agueda with the Saint Agatha chapel.
Interesting caves are near the Cales Coves settlement with the tomb of 1-2 centuries. BC- Naveta d’Es Tudons.
On Menorca, from where our live webcast is being conducted, are very popular the horse festivals. The most important holiday on the island of Menorca is Festa de Sant Joan (John the Baptist feast), which takes place in June. At the end of the summer, in August, the Equine Fiesta Horse Festival is held in Minorca.
The climate in Mahon is mild Mediterranean. Summer is very warm and sunny, with a temperature about + 27-29 C. Winter is warm, with temperatures up to +15 C. Tourist season here is from April to November. Wet season begins in August.
