Later, the Romans called this place “the city of shipyards”, which was quite suitable for the city, since in the times of antiquity and the Middle Ages there were shipyards on its territory.

Varazze with the port online, became famous due to the fact that canonized Jacopo da Varagine, a famous monk and writer of the 13th century was born here.

The old town of Varazze has many historical sights, among which the main place is occupied by a religious monument – the Church of St. Ambrogio from 1535. The bell tower of the temple, erected in the 14th century in the classic Lombard style, stands out especially. The churchyard is covered with pebbles in the style of the Greek Aegean islands. And its 12th century façade is an element of the city walls.

In the facade of the religious building, you can see a cannonball stuck there after the shelling of the city by the French in 1746.

From the Church of San Domenico it is convenient to walk along the abandoned train tracks. And in the vicinity of Varazze it is interesting to visit several curious monasteries and small fishing villages.
